Preparation.—"Take of resin of scammony, 1 ounce; resin of jalap, 1 ounce; curd soap, in powder, 1 ounce; strong tincture of ginger, 1 fluid ounce; rectified spirit, 2 fluid ounces. Add the spirit and the tincture to the soap and resins, and dissolve with the aid of a little heat; then evaporate the spirit by the heat of a water-bath until the mass has acquired a suitable consistence for forming pills"—(Br. Pharm., 1885). The British Pharmacopoeia (1898) replaces the rectified spirit with an equal quantity of tincture of ginger.
Action, Medical Uses, and Dosage.—(See Scammonium.) A drastic purgative. Dose, 5 to 15 grains.
