As I was scanning King's (from July 1999), I was intrigued by the constant references to "Drugs and Medicines of North America". So I put it into my "want" files at the antiquarian websites (www.abebooks.com, www.bibliofind.com), but whenever it's popped up it's been prohibitevely expensive (a total of 600 USD for all three Lloyd bulletin reprints? Come on...). Also, I hadn't really been buying any new old works for the last year or so. But then it popped up again, at a fair price this time, so could I resist? Of course not. Included is the full text, with all the images. It's a very thorough evaluation of medicinal and botanical history of plants native to the US, with a few comments on European uses. Unfortunately the Lloyd brothers only ever did these two volumes. Now, if only people had forked out the price of USD 1.00 per year, they might have gone on producing this quarterly publication for decades. Very reasonable. I'd pay that in a flash for something of this quality. Cheapskates...
As always, you need to know your plants before you use information this old.
The first two of the Lloyd reprint Bulletins (= Vol. I) are completely online now.
Drugs and Medicines of North America, 1884-1887, was written by John Uri Lloyd and Curtis G. Lloyd.
